Fenty Supports Release of Obama Administration’s Landmark Plan to End Homelessness

Wednesday, June 23, 2010
Washington, DC

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty joined Department of Human Services (DHS) Director Clarence H. Carter in congratulating the US Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) on their release of the nation’s first comprehensive plan to prevent and end homelessness.

The full report – titled Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness – is the result of a collaborative effort between 19 federal agencies including the US Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Labor (DOL), Health and Human Services (HHS), and Veterans Affairs (VA).

“I commend the Obama administration and leadership in the various agencies of the Interagency Council on Homelessness for setting aggressive goals that will make our efforts to end homelessness easier,” said Mayor Fenty. “I am especially proud that the successful partnership between DHS and Veteran’s Affairs and their efforts to house the District’s homeless veterans were highlighted as “Signature Initiative #1,” Fenty said.

Through this initiative, the District in partnership with the DC Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center is providing supportive services and housing to 105 of the most vulnerable veterans experiencing chronic homelessness in the City.

“We look forward to continuing to make the District a national example for ending homelessness as we fulfill the mandate articulated in Opening Doors,” said Carter.

The Opening Doors roadmap calls for an end to chronic homelessness and homelessness in the veteran community by 2015. It also commits to ending homelessness among children, family and youth by 2020. With an emphasis on cross-agency coordination, the Plan puts forth several strategies for the following: increasing leadership and civic engagement; increasing access to supportive housing; increasing economic security; improving health and stability; and transforming crisis response systems for the homeless.
