DHS' Transitional Housing Project Receives Design Award

Tuesday, October 12, 2010
Washington, DC

The Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Department of Real Estate Services (DRES) announced today that the 2010 Unbuilt Awards Washington, DC “Honor Award” is being presented to the design firm Core Architecture and Design. The award is for a permanent supportive transitional housing residence located at 611 N Street, NW.  The project will improve the space planning and living conditions for 30 women in transitional housing and will add 12 women in permanent supportive housing.  It will also be the first building in the District’s inventory to introduce permanent supportive housing with transitional residents in the same facility.

The 2010 Unbuilt Awards Washington, DC “Honor Award” is being presented to the design firm Core Architecture and Design.  Recipients of the award are judged on a number of factors, including sustainable and innovative engineering design. Construction is projected to begin the spring of 2011.  The projected completion is in the summer of 2012.  The building will be DC Green eligible and is tracking LEED Gold certification or higher.

“The Honor Award represents a significant accomplishment for the mission of our agency and the professionals who are ultimately responsible for the construction of this much needed facility,” said Clarence H. Carter, Director of DHS. “Having an environmentally friendly facility means a superior living environment for the residents of the District of Columbia to whom we serve each day.”

This is the second District project to receive a design award in the past 12 months.  The restoration of the historic Eastern Market was also recognized with an “Honor Award” in a design category by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Metropolitan Washington.  Construction is projected to begin the spring of 2011.  The projected completion is in the summer of 2012.  The building will be DC Green eligible and is tracking LEED Gold certification or higher.

"The District is excited to promote environmentally friendly construction and design, particularly as it applies a design to house District residents," said Robin-Eve Jasper, Director of the Department of Real Estate Services.  “Green buildings are better for the environment and have the potential to save thousands of taxpayer dollars over the lifecycle of the building.  They also provide the tenants with an improved living and work environment."
