H.R. 1, commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, became law on July 4, 2025, introducing new federal work requirements for certain SNAP and Medicaid recipients. Although the law applies nationwide, each jurisdiction is responsible for implementation. In the District, DHS is helping residents understand and meet the new requirements so they can maintain their benefits.
Across the country, schools and communities are working hard to tackle high levels of truancy, and DC is no different. Nationally, only a handful of school districts have brought chronic absenteeism down to pre-pandemic levels. The TANF Employment and Education Program (TEP) provides support to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients in the District by connecting customers to career-focused support that promote long-term stability and help parents and children succeed together. TEP connects customers to employment, training, and educational opportunities to help customers build skills, secure work, and improve sustainable economic outcomes for their households.
