The Peer Case Management Institute (PCMI) is a partnership between the DC Department of Human Services, the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, Pathways to Housing DC, and Howard University’s School of Social Work. The program trains District residents with lived experience of homelessness to become certified case managers, combining classroom instruction with field training in skills such as motivational interviewing and conflict de-escalation. Students experience an intensive 11- to 17-week program combining classroom education with hands-on field practicums with local service providers.
PCMI is designed with the following key objectives:
Long-term Career Pathways and Financial Stability: The institute is committed to offering specialized classroom and field-based training that opens up sustainable career opportunities for those with lived experience of homelessness, fostering financial stability and growth.
Utilizing Expertise for Positive Impact: By leveraging the unique insights and firsthand experiences of individuals who have navigated homelessness, the institute aims to enhance the quality of support provided to current consumers within the homeless services system.
Expanding Quality Case Management: This initiative seeks to create a new pipeline of skilled case managers, dedicated to serving the most vulnerable members of our community, thereby increasing the effectiveness and reach of the housing system.
Graduates of the program are prepared for employment within the homeless services system, building sustainable career pathways while strengthening the District's case management workforce.
Eligibility and More Information
District residents age 18 or older who have personal, lived experience of homelessness are encouraged to attend a PCMI information session to learn more.
DHS hosts virtual information sessions to give prospective applicants an overview of the program, including training expectations, eligibility, and how to apply. DHS staff is available during each session to answer questions.
