Tania Mortensen

Chief Operating Officer

Tania Mortensen is the chief operating officer for the DC Department of Human Services. In this role, Tania focuses on enhancing the systems and operational structures that allow the agency to effectively provide critical services and supports to District residents. She oversees capital operations and budget, agency-wide strategic planning efforts, human resources, and information technology.

Tania previously served as deputy administrator of operations for the DHS’s Family Services Administration (FSA) where she led financial management, procurement planning, contract and grant administration, resource allocation, and strategic planning.

Tania developed policies and procedures to maximize outcomes and ensure the effective delivery of programs and services. She built strong relationships with service providers and helped to design and launch new programs in tandem with key stakeholders.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tania played a leading role in the agency’s pandemic emergency response, including the development of policy and protocols for modified low-barrier shelter operations, new initiatives and strategies for COVID-19 testing and results data management, vaccination efforts, and closely coordinating and adjusting response protocols in tandem with providers, stakeholders, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and DC Health.

Tania holds a Juris Doctorate. Prior to graduating from law school, she served as an outreach worker supporting youth survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Tania grew up in Hawaii and enjoys baking, hiking, yoga, traveling, and Cuban and Brazilian dance.
