Mayor Bowser Cuts Ribbon at Renovated and Modernized DHS “H” Street Service Center

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Brenda Donald, Department of Human Services (DHS) Director Laura Zeilinger, and Department of General Services (DGS) Interim Director Jonathan Kayne, to celebrate the re-opening of the newly renovated and modernized “H” Street Service Center at 645 H Street, NE. The center, which services almost 300 District residents daily, was converted to a more modern and inviting location that includes amenities that will allow residents to conduct their business faster and with a better customer service experience.

“All District residents should have access to clean, and modern facilities in every part of our great city, said Mayor Bowser. “My Administration is committed to creating pathways to the middle class for all by investing in services that support all of our residents. It is critically important that when our residents are in need, they are treated with dignity and are able to efficiently access the services they need.”

 The “H” Street Center features a staffed self-help center where customers can renew their Medicaid benefits, a self-check-in desk for faster registration, and co-located services that allow residents to access several services in one place.

 District residents may apply for public benefits such as cash assistance, food stamps, medical assistance, burial assistance, and Interim Disability Assistance (IDA) at the “H” Street Service Center. Cash assistance or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) is given to families who are unemployed or re-entering the workforce. The food stamp program, also known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, is a federal aid program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which provides food assistance to families in need.

 Medical assistance or DC Medicaid is a healthcare program that pays for medical services for those who qualify such as seniors and unemployed or underemployed families. The Burial Assistance Program offers assistance to District residents who need help with funeral costs; and the Interim Disability Assistance (IDA) Program provides temporary financial assistance to District residents who are unable to work due to a disability and have a high probability of receiving federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
